StyleSavvy® Selects: The Autumn Transition Edit

Welcome back to another edition of StyleSavvy® Selects.

This time, we’re tackling the transition into a new season and the key pieces that can help shift your wardrobe towards Autumn.

While it’s still arguably too warm for a full wardrobe reset, the air is starting to change - and the stores are beginning to reflect that too.

Below, the StyleSavvy® team have selected some of their favourite transitional pieces to help bridge the gap between Summer and Autumn.

My choices are focused on those key pieces worth buying early in the season - items that work with what you’re wearing now but will become even more useful as temperatures drop. I’ve chosen versatile layers, footwear that will work across multiple trouser and dress shapes and a menswear knit that bridges the gap between casual and smart. It’s about introducing Autumn gradually, rather than changing your whole wardrobe at once.

River Island Brown Leather effect Jacket:
This jacket looks far more expensive than its price tag. The cinched waist gives the jacket shape, which can be tricky to achieve with this style. The funnel neck elongates the silhouette and adds presence to the overall look, especially when the sleeves are scrunched. Adding an item such as a jacket in a trending shape adds seasonal reference to your existing jeans and tops, without the need to rethink all your basics for the season ahead.

How to wear it into Autumn:

  • Wear now with a white t shirt for day or camisole for night - swap out for a polo neck or fine cashmere base layer when temperatures drop
  • Consider a wide leg trouser and pointed boots as well as denims with this, it will add a fashion angle to workwear
  • Cinch the side to the max and leave open, as a reimagined blazer, forming part of your look, not just your outer layer. Add a chunky scarf or pashmina for added warmth when commuting.

M&S Suede Ankle Boots:
The toe shape is really flattering while offering a little more comfort than a pointed style. The slim heel is set further back on the sole, giving a little more balance, while the sock-style fit hugs the ankle, making them particularly flattering with skirts and dresses too.

Buying ankle boots in August might seem unusual, to say the least, but the selection at this time of year is often at its best. Deciding on one key element of your Autumn wardrobe early also allows you to consider new-season coats or bags more carefully.

How to wear them into Autumn:

  • Right now these work with cropped jeans, in the coming weeks they will suit barrel, carrot and wide leg shapes, with the fabric covering to the ankle of the shoe
  • Black tights complement this colour better than a brown boot would, so skirts and dresses can be worn with these when the temperature drop
  • Consider a suede jacket or bag to complement the fabric.

NAKD Woven Tote Bag:
Chocolate brown is going to be a really popular neutral for Autumn and this is an easy way to introduce it before you’re ready for heavier clothes. The woven finish adds texture and makes it feel more considered than a standard everyday tote, while the oversized shape is practical enough for work and day-to-day use.

How to wear it into Autumn:

  • Pair with denim, a white tee and a trench while the weather is still mild
  • Use it to soften an all-black look - the chocolate brown gives you contrast without feeling too stark
  • Later in the season, wear with tonal shades of camel, burgundy, cream and deeper brown for an easy Autumn palette.

NAKD Faux Suede Bomber Jacket:
Is it obvious that the bomber is a key jacket shape for the new season? The key with this style is the faux suede finish, which makes it feel a little smarter and more grown-up than a traditional sporty style. The rich chocolate brown is easy to work into an existing wardrobe, while the slightly oversized shape gives you enough room to layer underneath as temperatures drop.

How to wear it into Autumn:

  • Keep it simple with a white tee, straight-leg jeans and trainers for an easy transitional look
  • Dress it up with tailored trousers, a fine knit and a loafer or ankle boot, this is a good way to make the bomber feel less casual
  • Pair with a midi skirt or dress and boots to balance the volume of the jacket with something more feminine underneath.

Menswear:
M&S Air Yarn Knitted Bomber:
It’s the ultimate smart transition piece to wear over T-shirts as temperatures start to drop. The navy works particularly well for cool tones, while the green option is a great choice for warmer tones. It also layers easily over all your basics, from tees to shirts, and will sit comfortably under coats come winter.

Air yarn typically sits better on the body than a piece created in a flatter structure. Think of this as a bomber jacket without the volume. The shape will help to broaden the shoulders, while still keeping the overall silhouette streamlined.

How to wear it into Autumn:

  • Zip over a cotton Oxford shirt in blue for commuting into the office
  • Select a long sleeve cotton t-shirt for more casual days
  • Will work under a wool coat or trench when it gets colder.

My edit is about getting more impact from small seasonal switches. Rather than investing in heavier Autumn pieces just yet, I've chosen two easy ways to change the mood of what you already own: a pop of high-shine red to bring neutrals to life and a long-sleeved Breton that adds just enough coverage for cooler days. Simple changes, but both make an outfit feel instantly more new-season.

COS Red Envelope Clasp Pouch:
It’s the ultimate high-impact, low-effort piece. The pop of red instantly refreshes neutral basics without requiring a full wardrobe overhaul, while the high-shine patent croc finish adds a luxe texture.
This is COS doing high-street accessories at their best. It combines the brand’s signature minimalism with luxury-level details.

How to wear it into Autumn:

  • With sharp tailoring: contrast the glossy red leather against an oversized charcoal wool blazer & trousers, a crisp white shirt & pointed shoes
  • With heavy knits: tuck it under your arm against a cream cable-knit sweater, dark denim and an olive trench
  • Tonal layering: pair it with rich Autumn shades like chocolate brown, plum, and deep burgundy.

& Other Stories Cotton Jersey Top:
Swapping short-sleeve tees for a long-sleeve cotton top is one of the easiest ways to transition into Autumn. This off-white Breton style combines a relaxed fit and slouched sleeves with a structured crew neck, giving you an easy, premium-feeling staple for just €39.

  • How to wear it into Autumn:
With denim: tuck into high-waisted barrel-leg jeans with a slick leather belt and pair of trainers
  • Under Autumn outerwear: layer it under a structured trench coat, leather bomber jacket or oversized blazer
  • For a preppy look, drape a sweater over the shoulders for an effortless, layered off-duty vibe.

My pieces are all about easy transitional updates that make your existing wardrobe feel ready for Autumn. I've focused on new-season silhouettes that have taken classic wardrobe staples and added updated shapes and proportions that make them feel instantly more current.

M&S Long Sleeve Side Tie Polo Top:
A great transitional piece, giving you the coverage of a long sleeve without the weight of an Autumn knit. The polo neckline adds polish, while the side-tie detail creates a more feminine, flattering shape that makes even a casual outfit feel pulled together.

How to wear it into Autumn:

  • Pair with your favourite jeans and loafers
  • Add a trench, leather jacket or blazer when temperatures drop
  • Layer underneath a sleeveless knit or gilet for a more Autumnal look.
  • The cotton fabric makes it breathable and comfortable for those in-between days.

ARKET Bloom Barrel Jeans:
These are a great way to update your denim for the new season. The barrel-leg silhouette feels more directional than a classic straight jean, while the mid-rise, relaxed fit and cropped leg keep them wearable. A fresh denim shape that will instantly update your wardrobe while still working with everything from trainers and tees to knitwear and boots.

How to transition them into Autumn:

  • Wear now with a simple tee, ballet flats or trainers
  • Come Autumn, swap the tee for a chunky knit or polo
  • Add loafers, ankle boots or a suede jacket.

Our Autumn appointments are open. If your wardrobe needs a seasonal refresh, now is the ideal time to start, while the best of the new-season collections are arriving in store and there’s plenty of choice across sizes and styles.
